Library and Information(L&I)

The Institute library is fully computerised and by the application of information technology, its resources are enriched many folds and retrievability of information has also increased substantially. Forestry being multidisciplinary, documents are available on various subjects. The present holdings of the library include about 15,500 books and subscription to 90 journals and Current Contents with rich collection of back volumes and reprints. CDs of CAB databases.

 

 

 

Forestry Compendium, Pests and Diseases, etc. are also available. CD server installed in the library functions as the storing point of various CDs and can be accessed over LAN by all Scientists.

Bamboo Information Centre - India , established in the library with the support of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada , provides information on various aspects of bamboo through its literary documents and databases developed for the purpose. The Centre's publications include four volumes of BIC-India Bulletin, two Information Bulletins, a Directory and the publication Bamboos of India. Annotated bibliographies on teak, bamboo and rattan, both in print and CDs are also available. The library provides literature search facilities to Scientists from within and outside the Institute, apart from art and photography and LAN facilities. The following are the major activities of library:

  1. Digitization of library documents.

  2. Provides information on bamboos through database search and also photocopies of bamboo literature.

  3. Preparation of bibliographies and databases on important topics.

  4. Provides art and photographic support.

  5. Management of the Institute Website, LAN and Internet facility.

  6. Collaborating in research programmes and in the publishing of the Journal of Bamboo and Rattans.

 

Local Area Network(LAN)

All the scientists and administrative heads are provided with computer systems connected with LAN. The backbone of the network is optic fibre and UTP cables. One IBM Server caters to the network with 512kpbs dedicated internet connectivity through LAN. The website of the Institute is http://www.kfri.org/
